An animal shelter in the 1800s is in jeopardy during the 2023 holiday season because food shortages will be a major problem for the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (spcaLA ).
Tips For A Safe And Stress Free Thanksgiving
The non-profit animal welfare organization has been serving Southern California since 1877 through a variety of programs. At its offices throughout the region, spcaLA provides free food, health care and support for its dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. The most important task, to feed the animals, is more risky during the holidays.
“With homeless and abandoned animals in our care, we are facing an incredible crisis,” spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein said. “We need about 33 tons of food to get us through the whole year.”
The organization is making an “urgent appeal” for people in the area to donate pet food or money to buy food. Food donations can be dropped off at any of spcaLA’s four locations during the event, and the group has a “want list” page dedicated to items in need.
“For some of these wish lists, we share foods that we would like,” said spcaLA Marketing and Communications Director Ana Bustilloz. “But honestly, if it is unopened food, we are very happy to give it … of course, the food is better, it lasts longer and is better for our animals, but when we talk about the kindness of people. , we welcome what they have to offer.”

Bustilloz added that spcaLA “has had a great year” like other shelters, and has seen an increase in admission numbers.
“We have a lot of animals on hand to feed, especially the big dogs that eat a little more,” he said. “And we assessed how much food we had and how much we needed, and we ran away. We thought this would be a good time to call people this season in hopes that they will support our pets at home. “
Local help is also needed during the holidays, including at the Santa Monica City Animal Shelter, which receives about 500 adoptions each year. The Santa Monica Animal Shelter Foundation recently launched an animal donation program on its website, where everyone can donate to a special animal that will help with treatment, medicine and food.
In November that they had to “level more than before” recently to buy food and equipment, as well as to pay for the treatment of animals and animals. Donations to the group can be made at smasf.org. For more information about spcaLA, visit spcala.com.
